The Photographer
In the spring of 2008, as a birthday gift for myself, I purchased a well-loved Nikon D50 from one of my favorite artists. Little did I know that the following December, I would discover model fashion and art nude photography, and that that discovery would lead me here.

I began shooting models in Feb of '09, and have already been featured in a number of print and online publications, and shown work in various art shows. My only education in the field includes a black and white film course taken in '01 that was never completed and a studio lighting workshop in Feb '09. I am otherwise self taught, and constantly learning.

I am currently shooting gothic/industrial concerts, creative portraiture, and erotic nudes. As well as alternative, steampunk, and fetish fashion.


The Name
The name Lex Machina has, I think, an interesting origin. In 2006 I was working as a machine operator, and listening to a lot of James Brown, so 'lexmachine', a cheesy play on 'sex machine' became my default handle just about everywhere online. From there it was a pretty short leap to Lex Machina [lɛks ˈmakʰɪna] which is both a throwback to my internet handle and a play on 'deus ex machina'

"A deus ex machina (IPA: [ˈdeɪʌs ɛks ˈmakʰɪna], literally "god from the machine") is a plot device in which a person or thing appears "out of the blue" to help a character to overcome a seemingly insolvable difficulty." (Wikipedia)

And as noted, the discovery of photography as a creative outlet, especially after years of searching through others, appeared "out of the blue" and helped me overcome a seemingly insurmountable emotional hurdle.

A good friend also pointed out that they couldn't help but read it as "lux machina" when I posted it, which from Latin would translate literally to "light machine". Since the creation of the camera was only possible thanks to man's study of light and color photographs possible thanks to study of the light spectrum, I feel that it's wildly appropriate.

Accepting freelance, contract, and permanent positions.

I am available for creative portrait, fashion editorial, and event photography, both on location and in studio.
At this time, I am also happy to offer my services as an assistant. I am able to do double or even triple duty as a stylist and/or make-up artist.

My primary interests are erotic, fetish, artistic nude and pornographic nude photography. My secondary interests include fashion and/or product photography for handmade artisans and self made designers. Tertiary interests would include headshots for authors or model portfolios, event, and band photography. At this time, offers outside the interests listed will gladly be considered, but may be declined.

All of my images, protected by US copyright, are for sale for commercial use. Occasionally I also release images under a creative commons license. Please feel free to contact me for licensing rates and information.

I am also available for professional photo retouching, graphic design, and web development.

Shoot Legalese

Models: This is my Model Release. With the exception of sets for alt nude sites or magazine tearsheets, you will sign this release if we shoot trade. I won't do a TF shoot without a full release, this is non-negotiable. If' you'd like to talk rates instead, I'm happy to do so, I'll even work within your budget if I'm able.

Bands: Performers, and other non-models. You do NOT sign a model release [and never should]. For you, I have a Limited Release License. This states that you are welcome to post those pictures anywhere online or use them in print, as long as I am fully credited.
   

More About Lex

  • More than a portfolio This website is more than just the portfolio page of a for-hire photographer and part-time designer and web developer. Let's just consider it the hub of my online presence. It is cobbled together with blood, sweat, tears and many, mainly free, online services. The content on these exterior sites is occasionally duplicated but it broadens my sphere of influence and connects me to more people in more places. I have tried to incorporate all of this content as seamlessly as possible while still providing adequate credit and links to these fantastic services. I hope you enjoy having a look around, and I encourage you to friend, follow, favorite, and comment my work and myself in any of these places.
  • Porn I love porn. I feel that it provides a valuable service and like many valuable services in life [i.e. lawn care and dry cleaning] the promotional material is horribly lacking in the aesthetic department. I aim to change that. Well not all of it, but I definitely intend to tip the scales a bit. I was, in fact, a self-styled interent pornlet for all of about 2 seconds internet time in my not-so-faraway youth, and you know what? It was pretty fun. My only embarassment is the low quality of the work, and my only regret is that I wasn't able to market myself better at the time.
  • RV I live full-time in an RV with Emmy. RV living affords usmany opportunities to work with people we otherwise might never meet and in places we might otherwise never see. It's also much harder for the authorities to connect the bodies if they're scattered throughout the US.
  • Family I grew up with the GLBT family. I myself identify as bi-sexual and my mothers are lesbian. I love working with 'family', and hope to do a tasteful and poignant series of transgender portraits sometime in the near future. [By the way, this means that if you are GLBorT, live anywhere in the continental US, and want to shoot with me, get in touch!]
